JACK REACHER - NEVER GO BACK

'Never Go Back' is superstar Tom Cruise's second outing as ex-army major turned drifting vigilante Jack Reacher. Edward Zwick's action thriller sees Reacher coming to the aid of military contact Major Susan Turner (a no nonsense kick-ass turn from Cobie Smulders) when she's falsely accused of treason. It quickly becomes clear that a major conspiracy is ongoing, and the pair are forced to go on the run with a posse of military police and badhat private contractors on their heels, and a teenager (the sassy, amusing Danika Yarosh) who just might be Reacher's daughter in tow...
Stoic, austere action heroes seem to be in vogue in films at the moment (Craig as Bond, Damon as Bourne, Statham as anybody), and although Tom Cruise isn't my favourite actor, I have to say that I've been impressed so far by his efforts as Reacher. I constantly hear from friends and family members who are familiar with the source novels that Cruise as Reacher is an unlikely piece of casting to put it mildly, but as someone who hasn't read the books, I come to the films without preconceptions, and it looks to me that Cruise has another hit franchise on his hands.
I can't pretend that 'Never Go Back' isn't formulaic, but what it lacks in originality it more than makes for with the pace and genuine excitement that it generates. It's fun and it's entertaining, and good value for the price of your ticket. As that advert used to say, 'it does what it says on the tin'.
